Christian Greetings From Across the Pond
It was a cool, damp day in southern Wales as we wound our way through the luscious green countryside towards the small village of Upton. A sign read “Private” but we knew we could enter the grounds of Upton Castle and drive straight to the 13th century chapel on the privately owned grounds. From the carpark we could hear the ting ting ting of a small high pitched bell, hidden behind shrubs and an old stone wall. Rounding the corner Robert spied two priests in robes welcoming parishioners to Mass. We approached and introduced ourselves. While Robert spoke with the priests, Faywen and I entered the chapel and were warmly greeted by the smiles and handshakes of the women in the parish.
During our research for our family trip to England and Wales, we discovered there was an Anglican Catholic Church near the seaside town of Tenby, one of our planned stops on the trip. We scheduled our Tenby visit, so that we could attend Mass at St Deiniol and St Asaph with St Giles. The church is about 20 minutes north of Tenby.
Similar to St Paul’s, the parish of St Deiniol is a smaller congregation, but the folks were warm, friendly Christian people and Robert, Faywen, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to worship with them and they with us! Fr Gordon and Fr Miles inquired after St Pauls and Fr Miles had even met Bishop Fodor at the Provincial Synod a couple of years ago! They prayed for our family and St Pauls ACC during Mass that day.
After Mass, we were invited to join the congregation for fellowship time, which is held in the garden café that is part of Upton Castle. The congregation of St Deiniol was granted permission to worship free in the old 13th century chapel every Sunday by the owners of Upton Castle, which is still a private residency. The owners do open up their gardens to the public a few days each week, including Sundays.
The congregation of St Deiniol extend a warm Christianly hand to St Pauls and her members. We all agreed that we should start a church friendship stretching across the pond! ~ Cammi Adams
